　　Panda may have faked pregnancy for more buns, bamboo

　　A giant panda slated to be the star of the first-ever live broadcast of the birth of panda cubs has lost the role -- after it was discovered the bear is not pregnant after all, Chinese state media reported.

　　Not only was it a phantom pregnancy, but zookeepers suspect the panda, Ai Hin, may have been faking it to improve her quality of life, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding told Xinhua on Monday.

　　Ai Hin, age 6, had shown signs of pregnancy, including a change in appetite, moving less and an increase in progestational hormone in July, according to Xinhua.

　　But after almost two months, she began acting normally again, zookeepers said.

　　Experts say pandas sometimes carry on the behaviors associated with early pregnancy after noticing that they get preferential treatment, the news agency reported.

　　"After showing prenatal signs, the 'mothers-to-be' are moved into single rooms with air conditioning and around-the-clock care," Wu Kongju, an expert at the Chengdu base, is quoted as saying.

　　"They also receive more buns, fruits and bamboo, so some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life."

　　The birth of Ai Hin's supposed cub and its progress in its early days, from its first cries to acquiring its distinctive black-and-white fur, were due to be broadcast online to panda lovers in China and worldwide.

　　Giant pandas are notoriously reluctant to breed in captivity and pseudo-pregnancies are common.

　　The female is fertile for no more than three days a year, and the time span for a pregnancy is from 80 to 200 days, according to the Chengdu base. Scientists will closely monitor behavioral and physiological signs, but it's often a guessing game.

　　Even if a pregnancy proves genuine, baby pandas have very low survival rates. According to the Chengdu base, only a third to a half of pandas born in Chinese captivity manage to survive past infancy.

　　There was good news last month, though, when a panda gave birth to a healthy set of triplets in China's Chimelong Safari Park in the southern city of Guangzhou. The cubs are thought to be the only living panda triplets in the world.

　　Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland thinks its panda, Tian Tian, could be the next to produce a cub, based on the latest scientific tests, but there are no guarantees.

　　"It is very likely that we will not know 100% if Tian Tian is pregnant until she gives birth," Iain Valentine, director of giant pandas for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said earlier this month.

　　As few as 1,600 giant pandas survive in the mountain forests of central China, according to the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo in Washington. More than 300 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world, most of them in China.

　　如果人家打电话来是要找你的上司， May I talk to your manager? (我能不能跟你们经理讲话?)这时你总不能糊里糊涂地就把电话拿给经理说， 说不定人家是打电话来跟你经理勒索一百万的呢! 所以通常我们一定要先确定打电话来的是谁。最客气的问法是， Whom I am speaking with? 或是 Whom am I talking to?(我正在跟谁讲话呢?) 但是人家一听是像我这种小毛头打电话找他们经理， 他们就会用比较口语的说法， And you are? (你是?)如果人家这样问我， 我就可以答， This is ...

　　像是 And you are? 这么口语的英文书上大概学不到， 但这却是外国人天天在用的句子，只怕你学了之后还不敢用。其实真的不用怕，越简单的句子大家越听得懂。 而且事实上 And you are? 这句话还有许多适用的场合，例如在公司的接待处 (reception)。 来访的客人如果说， I’m looking for Mr. Wolf. (我要找伍夫先生)接待小姐就可以反问他， And you are? (你是?) 所以像这种简单又好用的句子大家一定要记起来喔!

　　3、 I’ll put her on the phone. Just a second.

　　我会请她听电话， 请等一下。

　　Put someone on the phone 这个短语就是说请某人听电话。 例如你打电话找你女朋友， 结果女朋友的同事接了电话，就开始跟你东扯西扯， 问你们昨天是不是吵架了啊? 什么时候要结婚啦， 这时如果你实在不想跟她讲了， 就可以说， Could you please just put her on the phone? (你能不能请她来听电话啊?) 反过来如果今天是你接到了电话，结果要找的是别人， 你就可以说， Ok. I’ll put her on the phone. Just a second. (好，我会请她听电话， 请稍等一下。)

　　上面讲的 put someone on the phone, 指的多半是只有一部电话时， 但如果像公司里有许多分机，则用转接transfer 或是 redirect会比较恰当， 例如同样的情况你可以说， I’m transferring your call. 或是 I’m redirecting your call. (我帮你转接她的分机。) 如果是接线生转接的话，他们有时就只简单地说， One moment, please. 或是， OK. I’ll put you through.

　　4、 Would you mind holding for one minute?

　　在美国如果有机会打电话给客户服务 (Customer Service)部门， 如果没意外的话都会听到以下的电话录音， All of our representatives are currently busy serving their customers. 　　如果别人要找的人不在，通常我们有两种选择，第一种是请别人晚点再打来， 除了像例句用 try again/ call again之外， 我们也可以用 call back/ try back 这样的讲法. 例如你可以建议别人， Why don’t you callback in 30 minutes? (你何不 30 分钟后再打来呢?) 第二种选择就是请对方留言， 客气一点的讲法是，May I take a message? 或是 Would you like to leave a message? (你想留言吗?)

　　At the age of 17, Li went professional and began training in the state sports system. After the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, she made the life-changing decision to leave the national team.

　　李娜17岁时就已经是一名职业运动员，在国家队进行专业训练。在2008年奥运会之后，她做出了改变一生的决定，离开国家队。

　　The aggressive baseliner has since become one of the region’s biggest stars and the poster girl for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).After her win at the 2011 French Open, Li became the first player from Asia to win a Grand Slam singles title.

　　自此，这位野心勃勃的底线型选手不仅成为中国最耀眼的明星之一，还为国际女子网球协会拍摄广告。2011年李娜赢得法网公开赛冠军，成为第一个捧起网球大满贯赛单打冠军的亚洲选手。

　　She went on to claim another Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this past January. At the height of her career, she was ranked the world’s No 2 player behind the US’ Serena Williams.

　　今年一月，李娜获得她的第二个大满贯――澳大利亚网球公开赛冠军。在事业顶峰时期，她一度仅次于塞雷娜?威廉姆斯，世界排名第二。

　　Despite her tough-as-nails approach on the court, Li won millions of admirers with her warm and charming personality outside the arena. Her frequent joking in courtside interviews about life with Jiang Shan, 34, her former coach and husband of eight years, helped her become a global icon.

　　虽然，在赛场上强势坚韧，但是在赛场外，她的个性却温暖迷人，赢得了数以万计的粉丝。她常常在场边采访时，和自己的前教练、结婚八年的丈夫姜山一起调侃生活，这也让她成为一名国际偶像。

　　Li’s biggest accomplishment, however, is her contribution to the rise of tennis in China. Just a few years ago, the sport was still in its infancy. The number of female women’s tennis events in China has shot up from two to 10 over the course of the past decade.

　　李娜最大的成就则是为中国网球运动的崛起所做出的贡献。几年前，中国网球运动才刚刚起步，而在过去的十年中，中国女子网球就经历了从两分到满分的迅速崛起。

　　“I’ve seen change happening before my eyes … young girls picking up tennis racquets, setting goals, following their hearts, and believing in themselves,” Li said in her post.

　　李娜在退役信中说：“我看见变化就在我眼前发生，小女孩拿起网球拍，制定目标，跟随她的内心并且相信自己。”

　　Li is more than a sports superstar, she’s an inspiration to millions. In that sense, she’s achieved more in her professional life than most can ever dream.

　　李娜不只是一个网球巨星，她也激励了千万中国人。在她的职业生涯里，她更是收获了大多数人难以想象的成就!
